Making Memories: Acadia National Park, part 2

Once camp was set up we were itching to explore the island. 

We got the kids loaded up in the bike carrier (thank you friends who loaned it to us) and rode the bikes around Blackwood Campground and then took a service road to a little path along the rocky coast.  Little did I know we were hiking down to the ledge of a cliff.  WOW...Just a tad bit scary with squirming kids who insist on doing everything themselves! Luckily we made it out alive.

We were about to continue our ride down the one-way-road (the signs insisted that bikers follow the one-way rule), but decided to skip it since we really had no idea how long the loop was to the campground.  Maybe 27 miles?  At any rate, we decided to get back on the service road and head back to camp.

Keep in mind, we had ZERO cell phone service! It was nice to be electronic free all weekend, but unfortunately, Danny and I relied on our phones to tell the time...oops. (we used the GPS watch to tell the time and track mileage.)
 
(Note to self: before going camping, buy an ax...enough said.)

Danny was eager to get a fire going; he used his swiss army knife for kindling and smaller pieces of wood, then piled the bigger logs on top.  The wood was a bit damp so it took a while to get started. 

Once hot and ready, we roasted hot dogs!  AND gobbled up the smores.

Remember how we couldn't tell the time?  Well, we were hungry so we started the fire around 3:30 and ate around 4:30.  The night was still young.

On the down time, the kids kept themselved entertained.  Molly climbed onto anything and everthing physically possible and played near the bikes; Jakob collected pinecones (lining them on the bikes and rocks), jumped on and off the tree stump, and played monster/dinosaur around the tent.  GOOD TIMES!

As the night drew near, here are the highlights:

-Jakob asked when we were going back to his house.
-went for a drive and saw two deer.
-the kids fell asleep in the car and slept soundly through the night.
-I slept with the kids on the mattress, Danny took the floor.  (he was definitely the smart one)
-woke up to campers setting up their tents at 12am-they weren't the least bit quiet. 
-had a surprisingly successful first night.
